High Street, Elie

The architectural evolution of Elie High Street is illustrated by this turn of the century postcard; the wall-height of the buildings indicates their age, with the lowest dating from the eighteenth century and the slightly higher ones from the first half of the nineteenth century. The house and shop on the near left were replaced in 1906 by the new premises of Robert Thomson, grocer and wine merchant. Later proprietors of this shop were S.S.Melville in the 1930's and William N. Speed in the 1950's. The old house three doors up from it was completely rebuilt in the early 1950's.
