DYSART ST DENIS INTERMENTS, 1795-1861

DYSART ST DENIS LAIR REGISTERS, 1795-1861. There are 3 Registers, (1795-1817; 1818-1838; 1838-61), part of the CH2/390 series in the Dysart Kirk Session Records (Vols 23-25) in the SRO; the 2nd and 3rd Burial Registers have also been transferred on film to the OPR (426/9 and 426/10), but the 3rd up to the end of 1854 only. Although deaths are recorded in the Dysart OPR for the period 1795-1817, they are very scanty, and therefore it is worth checking the 1st Burial Register, should you have the opportunity. St Denis was opened in the middle of the 18th century as a relief Churchyard for Dysart St Serf's, which was found to be quite inadequate to match the needs of the parish. Consequently it was known locally as the Relief Burial Ground, or the "Burial Ground opposite Lord Rosslyn's gates," or the "West Burial Ground, opposite Dysart House." When Dysart Cemetry was opened in 1868, St Denis was closed, and by 1912 was in such a badly neglected condition that visitors had "to wade almost to the neck in the summer months among nettles and rank grass to get near to the grave." Later the stones were removed, and the area tarred over and made into a children's playground. Consequently, very few tombstone inscriptions survive for this Churchyard, and most are to be found in "Dysart: Past and Present" (1912) by Andrew S Cunningham].
