MARKINCH BURIALS, 1799-1854
[The burial register for Markich Churchyard is to be found in OPR 447, Books 4 and 7. It is very detailed. The burials have been recorded chronologically, and each burial has been given a sequential yearly number, beginning at No 1 for the first burial of the year. The grave, in which a person was interred, has been referred to by this yearly number, and thus it is possible to accurately trace parents, grandparents, great grandparents, brothers, sisters, and cousins. A rather curious entry (No 70 for 1847) reads: "Alexr Fliming at Star had a leg intd. 20th July, it lys 4 yrds west from the above 69th Int." Thomas Spittal was the Registrar in Markinch during the greater part of this period, and recorded the entries. He recorded the burial of his father, David Spittal, on 8th Jan 1831 (No 2, 1831), and his mother, Agnes Thomson, on 1 Oct 1834 (No 92, 1834), and also his mother-in-law, Agnes Smith. There is some damage to the latter half of the Register. The last page records the number of Burials per year, but of the 73 Interments for 1845, only 29 have survived to April 1845, and of the 73 for 1849, only 41 have survived to July 1849. A new Register, in a different had, begins in 1850. The Register also records the burials in the New (Northall) Cemetry. The first interment there was No 41 for 1854, viz. William, son of David Johnston, farmer at Bighty. The Old Church-yard was shut up on 11 Feb 1856. The last interment was No 8 of 1856, Robert, son of William Stenhouse at Plaisterers, who was buried 3 Feb 1856. Typescripts of the Churchyard burials from 1853-1856 and the Northall Cemetry burials from 1854 are to be found in the Cemetries Department at Unicorn House, Glenrothes]
