CRAIL SHOEMAKERS, 1589-1834
[Extracted from 3 Minute Books. The first 2 are part of the Craft Court Books of the Cordiner Incorporation of Crail, 1589-1743 (B10/11/6) and 1653-1743 (B10/11/7), now in St Andrews University Library. The 3rd covers the period 1755-1834, was presented to the Rev Mr Reid of Crail by Mr William Scott, Inspector of Poor, in 1884, and is now in Crail Museum. The first Craft Book (1589-1743) opens with Acts and Statutes of the craft, followed by election of Deacons and some apprentice listings, 1731-43; next follows admission of Freemen, 1614-1743, some Accounts (1696-99), and loans to members, 1639-40; the earliest entries are at the rear of the book, listing Freemen and apprentices, 1589-1617. Book 2 (1653-1743) opens with the oath of the craft, followed by election of Deacons, 1653-1743; the centre of the book has apprentice listings, 1653-1741; also recorded are the borrowings of money by craft members from Trade funds and these entries have been scored out, probably indicating that the debt has been cleared. Book 3 (1755-1834) lists apprentices from 1759-1793, and election of Deacons/admission of Freemen, 1755-1834]
