BROWN, JAMES: lawful son of Isobell Elder; bound app to John Wallace, present Deacon, for 4 yrs after Whitsunday 1808 (recorded 26 May 1808); adm Freeman, 22 June 1818; active, 1818-44; served as Boxmaster in 1818-19, and Deacon in 1824-26, and again in 1828, but did not accept the office; Pigot (1825) lists him in Market Street; in Aug 1837 he was "in distress" and was granted 5/- from Trade Funds (see Minute dated 17 Aug 1837); in Oct 1837 he was again allowed 5/- from Trade Funds, "but as the said James Brown has a small property, the Trade must be satisfied that he has not disponed the same, or in that event the person in whose favour it is granted must hereafter provide for and take charge of him" (Minute dated 10 Oct 1837); in Jan 1838 he wrote to the Trade: "...having been long confined with distress and am now in great want, may I beg of you to allow such a sum from the Trade as you may be pleased...and whatever sum is allowed....be deducted from my share of the Trade funds when divided" (Minute dated 11 Jan 1838)

NIVEN - fleshers in St Andrews from 1818 - c 1980; business founded by DAVID NIVEN (03 Sep 1797-06 Dec 1865), 5th lawful son of John Niven, baker, St Andrews, and Euphemia Grigor, who had been app to James Mason, flesher in St Andrews, for 3 yrs from Whitsunday 1811; he commenced business in Logie's Wynd in 1818, and was adm to the Flesher Incorporation on April 20 1821; later (by 1836) he went to Dundee, and set up business there as a flesher, and the St Andrews business then fell into the hands of his eldest son by his marriage, 13 July 1819, to Margaret Wright, ROBERT NIVEN (b St Andrews, July 11 1820; d Edinburgh, Feb 13 1864), who had been adm to the Flesher Incorp on Oct 22 1836; later he went into partnership with his brother, DAVID WRIGHT NIVEN (b 21 Sep 1823; d Newport, Dec 1 1887 aged 64) - his father had tried to get him adm Freeman of the Flesher Trade at the same time as Robert in Oct 1836, when he was only 16 yrs age, but the Trade refused to admit him, as he could not be "a properly qualifed and operative flesher," and also "on the grounds that there is no precedent for admitting such minors" (see Minute dated 27 Oct 1836) - as fleshers in Dundee, but this partnership was dissolved in Sep 1847; while David Niven jnr remained as a flesher in Dundee, Rbt Niven concentrated on the business in St Andrews, which was then located in South Street; later (by 1861) he had removed to Church Square; following his death in Feb 1864, the business was cont by his widow, MRS CATHERINE NIVEN, or Paton (she d Dec 2 1901 aged 76), unitl her son, ROBERT NIVEN (d 1896) came of age, and took over the management of the businessit was he who erected the building at 8 Church Square in 1892; Rbt Niven d on My 9 1896 aged 46, and the business was cont by his widow, MRS ROBERT NIVEN, until her death in May 1904, when it was purchased by John Hendry, of the firm of A & J Hendry (SAC May 21 1904); he engaged THOMAS NIVEN and MRS MENZIES (Maggie Niven) as members of staff, and incorporated the business with his own at 104 South Street; ROBINA NIVEN, the yst dau of Mr & Mrs Robert Niven, re-opened her late parents' shop on May 30 1904 (SAC May 28 1904), and was in business there for a short period; her brother, WILLIAM NIVEN (d 1929), who had served an apprenticeship in his mother's shop in Church Square, had returned to Fife in 1897, after 25 yrs spent in first-class shops in Edinburgh, Oban, Stirling and Bishopbriggs, and commenced business at Strathkinnes in Dec 1897 (SAC Dec 18 1897), opened shop at 84 Market Street in April 1898 (SAC April 30 1898), and erected a slaughter-house at Strathkinnes in Feb 1899 (SAC Feb 11 1899); finally, in May 1904, he removed to 16 Church Square (SAC May 14 1904), where the business remained for many years; he d Jan 22 1929 aged 74 (SAC Jan 22 1929), having taken his sons, K.A.D. WALLACE, WILLIAM (2) (1834-1898): b 20 April 1834, son of Laurence Wallace (3) and Cecilia Taylor; succeeded to his father's shop at 66 Market Street on his death in May 1860, and cont business until Nov 1861, when he was disposing of the goodwill and giving up business (FH Nov 14 1861)
