ST ANDREWS HAMMERMEN, 1539-1792

 

[Extracted from the Minute Book of the Hammermen Incorporation of St Andrews, 1539-1792, presented to the University of St Andrews in 1878 by John Bowes, builder, Paisley, through the good offices of David Semple, FSA, Paisley. In foolscap folio and encased in plain substantial brown leather binding, the book is in 2 parts, the first portion extending from 1539 to 1731 and the second from 1731 to 1792. TULLIS, WILLIAM (1729-1791): smith in Argyle; was b Newburn, 12 Nov 1729, son of Robert Tullis (d c 1780; will recorded 17 Jan 1781), smith in Newbigging, Lawhill, afterwards tenant and feuar of Blinkbonny, in the parish of Newburn, and his wife, Margaret Miller of Kemback, whom he had m in 1724; he followed his father's craft, and was the first of his family to go to St Andrews, and "set up his own smithy and workshop in 'Argyle' just outside the West Port in St Andrews;" adm Freeman, 12 Sep 1766; Boxmaster (1769-70); Deacon (1771-73; 1780-82); he "became a highly respected and evidently prosperous citizen. For apart from the Argyle premises which he may, or may not have owned, he bought in 1774 'an acre of land' lying among the Prior Acres of St Andrews, in the field called 'Middleshade" from David Bisset in Durie, and in 1785 another acre in the same Prior Acres region 'known as Wester Langlands' from David Adamson;" m 14 June 1765 Jane Russell (she d 18 Dec 1820) of Dumbairnie, nr Largo; there were 7 sons of the marriage, four of whom died in infancy, including Robert (d. 13 Dec 1772) Thomas (d 12 March 1777), and William (d 26 May 1777); of the three who survived into adulthood, the eldest, David (qv), succeeded to his father's business; the 2nd son, Robert Tullis (1774-1831), founded the firm now known as Tullis-Russell; and the third, William, became a baker in Edinburgh (see C D M Ketelby: Tullis Russell, 1809-1959 (1967)
